Improve Quality of Life in Iowa
This grant provides funding to 501(c)(3) nonprofits and local government entities in Akron, Iowa, to support projects that enhance community quality of life in areas such as arts, education, health, and the environment.
The Akron Community Foundation, established in 2001 by Florence Peterson through the Siouxland Community Foundation, is dedicated to supporting charitable needs in Akron, Iowa, for present and future generations. The Foundation accepts gifts from individuals, families, and organizations to establish endowments that generate income for local grants, governed by a seven-member advisory board. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life in Akron by addressing community needs, encouraging volunteerism, and distributing funds for impactful projects. The Foundation’s grant program supports projects in five key areas: Arts & Culture, Civic, Education, Environment, Health, and Human Services. Grants are available to 501(c)(3) nonprofits and local government entities that serve the 51001 zip code area. Applications are evaluated on how well they address current needs, benefit the community, and leverage additional resources or volunteer support. Collaborative projects are especially encouraged, while lower priority is given to endowment requests. Ineligible uses include individual support, political activities, and general operating expenses. The application period opens on November 1 and closes on February 1, with grant decisions announced in mid-March. Selected projects must submit a final report documenting outcomes and expenditures. Donors interested in contributing can support the general Community Fund or establish a named fund, creating a lasting legacy in Akron. For more information, donors can contact Advisory Board Chair Mike Hohenstein at (712) 568-1091 or the Siouxland Community Foundation at (712) 293-3303.
