Early Literacy Grant Program
This program provides funding to nonprofit organizations and public institutions in Southern Minnesota to distribute books to children from birth to age eight, particularly focusing on diverse and at-risk populations.
The Early Literacy Grant Program, administered by the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), aims to bolster early childhood education by increasing access to books for children from birth to age eight. This initiative is particularly focused on school readiness and recognizes the essential role of early literacy in child development. Through partnerships with Mankato-based publishers ABDO and Capstone, SMIF is able to provide books directly to organizations that work with young children and families. The primary goal of the program is to supply books that can be kept and read by families, fostering reading habits from a young age. Applicants for this grant must be nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status, units or agencies of government, or public institutions. Eligible proposals must directly benefit the communities within SMIF’s 20-county service region in southern Minnesota. Once awarded, all books must be distributed within one year of the grant date. SMIF prioritizes funding for organizations that serve marginalized communities, including but not limited to children from low-income households, racial and ethnic minorities, immigrant and refugee populations, and families in geographically isolated areas. Successful proposals will also focus on strengthening parental awareness of literacy needs and include parent education components. SMIF values creative approaches to outreach and encourages collaborations with other organizations to amplify literacy programming. Proposals that integrate these elements and demonstrate a strong connection to underserved populations will be given special consideration. Applications must be submitted through SMIF’s grant portal no later than March 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The grant opened on February 17, 2026, and applicants will be notified of funding decisions by May 1, 2026. Books awarded through the grant will be available for pickup in Owatonna on June 16, 17, 24, and 25, 2026. SMIF may pre-package books in advance of pickup and will communicate these details upon award notification. Required documentation for the application includes a completed application form and, for nonprofit organizations, proof of IRS 501(c)(3) status. All applicants will receive email confirmation of submission. The grants are awarded competitively, and recipients are expected to submit a final report by July 12, 2027. For any inquiries about eligibility or proposal scope, applicants are encouraged to contact Margaret Radel, Early Childhood Project & Grants Coordinator, at [email protected] or by phone at 507.455.3215.
