Grant Description

The Harold T. Southern Family Foundation, administered through Wells Fargo Trust Philanthropic Services Private Foundations, was established in 2014 by the children of Harold Turner Southern and Mildred Formyduval Southern. This foundation honors the legacy of their parents, who deeply valued nature, physical activity, and altruism. Their philanthropic vision is rooted in a desire to preserve the environment and support the development of youth through sport, reflecting the family’s appreciation for the outdoors and tennis. The foundation’s mission centers on three key focus areas: support for specific educational institutions via endowments and trust funds in North and South Carolina, promotion of youth tennis programming within North Carolina and the Southern region, and conservation efforts aimed at protecting lands, parks, forests, and waters in western North Carolina. However, current application opportunities are strictly limited to environmental conservation efforts, particularly within organizations primarily based in western North Carolina. Applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Grants are accepted year-round but must be submitted by July 31 to be reviewed in time for the foundation’s annual grant meeting in September. Decisions are typically communicated by October. A progress report is generally required within six months of receiving grant funds unless otherwise stipulated at the time of award. The application process is managed online, and applicants are encouraged to begin by accessing the online portal. Confirmation of application submission is sent via email. Those seeking educational scholarships are directed to explore separate opportunities through the College Scholarship Application (csascholars.org), as individual scholarships are not administered through this foundation. For further inquiries or technical support, applicants can contact Wells Fargo’s grant administration team via email at grantadministration@wellsfargo.com or by calling 1-888-235-4351.
