Grant Description

The Copper Shores Community Health Foundation provides grants to support organizations that aim to improve health outcomes in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations, public institutions of education, or units of local government operating in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. Funding supports both new and existing programs, projects, or services with measurable goals that address a defined health need in the community. Grant applications may be submitted at any time for general funding consideration, while targeted Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are issued periodically to address specific community priorities. One current active RFP is the Community Recreation and Facilities Grant, which is designed to promote inclusive, universally designed recreational infrastructure with funding intended for project execution in 2026. All applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the process with a Letter of Inquiry (LOI), although this step is optional. The LOI serves as a brief overview of the proposed project, which allows Copper Shores to determine alignment with their funding interests before applicants submit a full proposal. For non-RFP requests, organizations must complete the “Request for Funding Application” and submit it at least two months prior to the project start date. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Eligible applicants must be recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits, local government entities, or public educational institutions. They must be based in and serve residents of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, or Ontonagon counties. Organizations must be in good standing with the IRS and the State of Michigan, including current 990 filings and either CPA-prepared financial statements or certified audits, depending on the organization’s revenue. Copper Shores provides ongoing support during the grant process, including one-on-one consultation and technical assistance. They also offer resources for grant reporting and amendment submissions. A Grant Report or Follow-Up Report must be submitted as required by the specific grant’s customized reporting schedule. Amendment forms are available for approved grantees who need to modify their budget or timeline. For additional support or questions about the grant process, potential applicants can contact Mary Jo Munch, Grants Manager and Program Coordinator, or email the organization directly at info@coppershores.org. Grant applications and related forms are available on the Copper Shores website.
