Grant Description

The Fred C. & Katherine B. Andersen Foundation, based in Bayport, Minnesota, was established in 1959 and is rooted in the belief that charitable giving fosters resilient and thriving communities. Guided by a philosophy of quiet leadership, the Foundation has historically prioritized support for underserved and under-resourced populations in order to enhance community health and stability. This foundational mission remains the guiding force behind the Foundation’s grantmaking strategy, which emphasizes both responsiveness and responsibility to the needs of local communities. The Foundation’s mission is centered around improving quality of life in the St. Croix Valley region of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It provides financial support to nonprofit organizations that address local community needs across several core focus areas. The Foundation funds general operating expenses, specific programs, and projects, with limited consideration for capital requests. Its funding priorities span healthcare (including mental and chemical health, hospitals, and medical research), affordable housing for families and seniors, youth education initiatives, human services (basic needs, employment, and food insecurity), civic engagement, and environmental education. These areas were chosen to align with pressing local challenges and opportunities for meaningful impact. Eligibility for funding is limited to 501(c)(3) public nonprofit organizations. The Foundation does not support endowments, individuals, political campaigns, lobbying activities, or sponsorships. While most grants are awarded to organizations operating in the Foundation’s geographic priority area—the St. Croix Valley communities—some grants may be awarded to organizations outside the region if their work aligns strongly with one or more funding priorities. Applications must be submitted through the Foundation’s online grant portal, which is hosted on the Foundant platform. As of July 23, 2025, the platform will have a new user interface to improve the applicant experience. Prospective applicants can register or log into the portal, complete eligibility screening questions, and begin the application process. Applicants may save and return to their applications before submission. Once submitted, applicants can download a copy for their records. Previous grantees are also expected to register and apply through the updated portal. The Foundation follows a triannual application cycle with three annual deadlines. Applications are accepted from February 1 to March 30 (results released in June), from May 1 to June 30 (results in September), and from August 1 to September 30 (results in December). Notifications are sent via email, and successful applicants typically receive their funding checks within one month of award notification. Late applications are not accepted. Applications are evaluated by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff, based on how clearly the project identifies and addresses a specific need, the clarity of the proposed activities, alignment with the Foundation’s mission, and expected community impact. For technical support related to the grant system or to ask program-related questions, applicants may contact the Foundation by email at info@fkandersen.org or by phone at 651-583-8485.
