Career Transition Award for NINDS Intramural Clinician-Scientists (K22 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The Career Transition Award for NINDS Intramural Clinician-Scientists (K22) is designed to help licensed neurologists and neurosurgeons transition from NINDS intramural research positions to independent faculty roles in extramural institutions. This program aims to cultivate the next generation of clinician-scientists conducting neuroscience research by supporting a phased career development pathway. During the intramural phase, participants receive mentorship and access to NIH resources. They transition to an extramural academic institution in the second phase, continuing their research while fostering professional independence. Applicants must propose research aligned with the mission of NINDS, emphasizing significant scientific problems in neuroscience. The program supports non-clinical trial research, although candidates may gain experience in mentor-led clinical trials. Awardees will engage in rigorous career development activities, including experimental design, grant writing, and leadership training. The program requires a comprehensive research and career development plan, detailing transition strategies to a tenure-track or equivalent extramural faculty position. The K22 award provides up to five years of funding, with a maximum of two years for the intramural phase and at least three years for the extramural phase. Salary support includes up to $125,000 per year during the extramural phase, with an additional $50,000 annually for research expenses. Intramural phase support includes $25,000 per year for career development costs. Institutions hosting awardees in the extramural phase must offer protected research time—75% effort for neurologists or 50% for neurosurgeons—and demonstrate a strong commitment to the candidate's development. Eligibility is limited to licensed neurologists and neurosurgeons in the NINDS intramural program who are within four years of completing residency or fellowship. Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. The program encourages applications from underrepresented groups in science. Candidates cannot have prior or concurrent NIH career development awards or serve as principal investigators on major NIH research grants. Applications must include a detailed research plan, career development strategy, letters of support from mentors, and a transition plan to the extramural phase. Submissions are accepted three times a year, beginning February 12, 2025. Applicants must register in SAM.gov and eRA Commons before applying. Selection criteria include the significance of the proposed research, candidate potential, quality of the mentorship plan, and institutional commitment. Transition to the extramural phase requires administrative approval and proof of a faculty position with adequate resources and mentoring.
