Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program
This grant provides funding to Texas health institutions to develop and enhance accredited forensic psychiatry fellowship programs, supporting training, salaries, and collaborative educational efforts in the field.
The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program (FPFP) is a competitive state-funded initiative managed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to expand and support accredited forensic psychiatry fellowship training programs across Texas. Targeted at health-related institutions that host ACGME-accredited psychiatry fellowship programs, the FPFP provides resources to strengthen training infrastructure, fund clinical fellow salaries and benefits, and foster statewide educational collaboration in forensic psychiatry. This program supports the creation, expansion, and administration of one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited forensic psychiatry fellowship programs. Grant funds may be used for direct expenses associated with program operations, including salaries and benefits for training physicians and program directors, provided they are licensed as Doctors of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Beyond salaries, funding may cover costs related to travel and administrative support necessary to sustain high-quality clinical and educational programming. To ensure broad educational impact, grantees are expected to provide fellows with appropriate forensic clinical rotations and meet all ACGME requirements. Institutions are also strongly encouraged to collaborate with other awardees to develop and share didactic curriculum and joint educational activities that benefit fellows across programs statewide. This collective model aims to raise the overall standard and accessibility of forensic psychiatry training in Texas. The program has a total of $5 million in available funding for the 2026–2027 grant cycle, with individual awards capped at $555,555.55. THECB anticipates awarding up to nine grants. Selected projects are expected to align closely with state workforce needs and demonstrate a clear plan for sustainability and impact. The grant period begins either on April 1, 2026, or upon the execution of the Notice of Grant Award (NOGA), and ends on August 31, 2027. Eligible applicants must submit a complete application through the THECB Grants Management System by 11:59 p.m. CT on March 2, 2026. Incomplete or late submissions will not be reviewed. No letters of intent are required, and each institution may submit only one application. Applications must include all required signatures, documentation, and a project design that outlines the training program structure, implementation plan, and evaluation strategies. Proposals will be evaluated on project design, alignment with program goals, capacity to train and retain fellows, and potential for long-term impact. Institutions awarded funding will be responsible for regular narrative and financial reporting throughout the grant term, with opportunities to request no-cost extensions under specific conditions. Program inquiries may be directed to the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program Team at THECB via email. The complete Request for Applications and grant rules are published by THECB and must be followed in full by applicants.
