The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) offers the Professional Section Grant Program to support its regional SME Sections and enhance the broader mining industry's reputation and impact. As a prominent professional organization serving mining and metallurgical professionals, SME aims to inspire and support its members through educational and developmental resources. The Section Grant Program serves as a strategic tool to bolster public perception of the mining industry, increase member engagement, and provide professional development opportunities within SMEβs network.
These grants are specifically tailored for SME Sections and must fund one-time, standalone projects that demonstrate significant local or industry impact. Grant funds are not intended for ongoing operational costs, such as speaker or meeting fees, travel expenses, scholarships, or general section administration. Rather, they support innovative, educational, and developmental initiatives such as community outreach through science and mining education, partnerships with student chapters, and seed funding for local professional development conferences.
Each SME Section is permitted to submit one grant application per year. The funding request may not exceed 80% of the total project budget, requiring the section to contribute at least 20% toward the initiative. For projects with funding requests over $500, applicants must submit a detailed project plan. A review and selection committee evaluates proposals based on project quality, completeness, and potential impact. Not all submissions are guaranteed funding.
Grant applications are typically due around July 1 each year, with the exact date announced annually. To be eligible, SME Sections must be in good standing, have submitted their annual financial statement by the November deadline, and updated leadership information with SME headquarters. All section leaders must also be SME members. Funded projects must be completed within 24 months and may require two progress reports: one at mid-term and one upon completion.
Examples of fundable projects include educational rock kits for schools, local community outreach events involving student chapters, collaborative efforts with youth organizations such as the Boy or Girl Scouts, and Kβ12 science or mining programming. Career-focused student field trips are also eligible. The SME headquarters in Englewood, Colorado oversees the program, with questions directed to cs@smenet.org or by phone at +1 (303) 948-4200.
Focus on clear impact and complete submissions. Prioritize educational or professional development benefit.
