The Professional Section Grant Program, managed by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), is designed to support SME Sections in their efforts to engage members, promote the mining industry, and provide professional development opportunities. SME, a leading organization dedicated to the advancement of mining and related disciplines, offers these grants to strengthen local section initiatives that align with the societyโs broader mission of enhancing industry perception and professional growth.
These grants are reserved for specific, one-time projects initiated and executed by SME Sections. Unlike general operational support, the funding cannot be used for speaker or meeting fees, travel, scholarships, or recurring expenses. Instead, eligible uses include outreach materials, K-12 education initiatives, collaborations with youth organizations such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, community engagement events, or seed money for professional development conferences.
To qualify, SME Sections must be in good standing with the SME Headquarters and must have submitted their financial statements and updated leadership details for the current year. All section officers and board members must hold SME membership. Each section may submit only one grant application per year, and all projects must be completed within 24 months of funding.
Funding is limited to a maximum of 80% of the total project cost, requiring sections to contribute at least 20% from other sources. Applications exceeding $500 must include a detailed project plan. Once approved, grant recipients are expected to provide status updates, including a mid-project and a final report to SME.
The selection of grant recipients is managed by the SME Grant Selection Committee, which evaluates proposals based on project quality, impact, and alignment with the goals of the program. Applications are typically due around July 1 each year, with the exact date determined and published annually by SME.
Contact for questions and submissions is the SME headquarters in Englewood, Colorado. General inquiries can be directed to cs@smenet.org or by phone at +1 (720) 738 4085. This grant opportunity recurs annually, with each cycle supporting innovation and engagement within the professional mining community.
Focus on completeness and impact; generic expenses will not be approved.
