Grant Description

The Rediscovering Our Revolutionary Tradition grant program is administered by the Division of Preservation and Access at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). NEH is an independent federal agency established to support research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. This specific funding opportunity honors the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and focuses on preserving and increasing access to materials related to America's founding era and the development of its government at federal, state, and local levels. This program supports a broad range of projects that preserve and improve access to primary source materials documenting American independence, the founding of the nation, and the history of American government. Eligible activities include conservation treatment, rehousing, digitization, cataloging, transcription and translation, metadata enhancement, and the development or updating of digital resources like databases and finding aids. Funded projects must demonstrate a significant contribution to the humanities by making these historical resources more accessible to researchers, educators, and the public. There are two categories of awards: Individual Institution grants of up to $350,000 for projects by a single institution over two years, and Consortium grants of up to $750,000 over three years for collaborative projects among multiple institutions. Approximately $14 million is available for the program, with around 30 awards expected. Applications are accepted from nonprofit organizations, accredited public and private higher education institutions, state and local government entities, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. Matching funds are not required. Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov, with deadlines on September 4, 2025, and January 15, 2026. Projects must begin between June 1 and September 1, 2026, for the September deadline, or between November 1, 2026, and January 1, 2027, for the January deadline. Applications must include a narrative, work plan, outputs list, resumes or bios, budget, and other supporting materials. The review process evaluates project significance, methodological soundness, proposed outputs, sustainability and outreach plans, staff qualifications, and budget appropriateness. Contact for this opportunity is the Division of Preservation and Access at preservation@neh.gov or 202-606-8570. The program resource page can be found at https://www.neh.gov/program/rediscovering-our-revolutionary-tradition. Applications are encouraged to be submitted at least 48 hours in advance of the deadline to allow time for error correction. The final award announcements will be made by April 30, 2026, for the September deadline, and August 31, 2026, for the January deadline. The Notice of Funding Opportunity was published June 16, 2025.
