Grant Description

The City of Annapolis Community Grant Program offers operating and capital grants to support nonprofit organizations serving the residents of Annapolis, Maryland. This program is established under the Charter and Code of the City of Annapolis, specifically Chapter 6.16.060, and is designed to enhance the quality of life within the city through targeted investment in community-based initiatives. Administered through a structured committee review process, the program aims to support projects that align with the City’s strategic priorities and demonstrate significant public benefit. Operating grants are intended to support the general, day-to-day operations of nonprofits, while capital grants are reserved for tangible investments such as property purchases, facility development or expansion, and acquisition of essential equipment. Applicants must choose the type of grant that best suits their project needs and provide documentation that illustrates their capacity to implement the proposed work successfully. All applicants must be in good standing with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation and must demonstrate the ability to leverage additional sources of funding to maximize impact. To be considered for funding, applications must directly address one or more of the City’s four core priorities: enhancing quality of life and promoting self-sufficiency for individuals and families; preserving and enriching the character of communities; contributing to economic vitality; and supporting efforts related to revitalization, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Additional consideration is given to organizations that collaborate with local institutions such as churches and schools, and that can demonstrate that a significant majority—at least 75%—of their programming benefits Annapolis residents. Organizations must provide a comprehensive application that includes financial documentation such as a recent audit or IRS Form 990, a current operating budget, and evidence of nonprofit status. Other required attachments include a list of the Board of Directors, a Certificate of Good Standing, and any Memoranda of Understanding with partner entities, if applicable. Returning applicants are expected to demonstrate consistency in grant reporting and responsible stewardship of previous awards. A dedicated committee composed of representatives from the Mayor’s office, Finance Department, and two at-large staff members will evaluate submissions. This committee uses a defined set of criteria to recommend grant awards to the City’s Finance Committee, which integrates these recommendations into the broader municipal budget process. Final award decisions are made within this fiscal planning framework. For the FY 2027 cycle, applications must be received no later than 4:30 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. No late applications will be accepted, and no deadline extensions will be granted. Applicants with questions or in need of support during the application process may reach out via email at [email protected]. This annual program offers a meaningful opportunity for nonprofits to contribute to the well-being and growth of Annapolis while receiving city-backed support for their missions.
