American Short-Term Research Publication Grant
This grant provides $8,000 to women with doctoral or professional degrees to support the preparation and publication of research manuscripts, particularly in STEM fields and gender equity issues.
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers the American Short-Term Research Publication Grants as part of its longstanding mission to advance gender equity for women in higher education. Founded in 1888, the AAUW American Fellowships are the oldest non-institutional funding source for graduate and postdoctoral women in the United States. This particular program is designed to increase the number of women with academic tenure by supporting the preparation of manuscripts for publication. The program emphasizes expanding opportunities for women in academia, especially those working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, as well as research focused on gender equity issues. The grant provides $8,000 to successful applicants, disbursed as a single payment at the beginning of the award term. Funds may be used for activities such as drafting, editing, or revising manuscripts; replicating research; addressing issues raised during peer review; or other work that enhances the chances of publication. Grantees must be listed as the sole author, first author, or an author of equivalent significance on the resulting publication. The award term runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, with a final report due by July 15, 2027. Applicants must identify as women and hold a doctoral or professional degree, including Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.S.W., or M.P.H., at the time of application. They must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Certain individuals are excluded from eligibility, such as AAUW board members, employees, review panelists, and their immediate families, as well as applicants for another national AAUW fellowship or grant in the same year, prior recipients of national AAUW fellowships or grants (with some exceptions), and tenured professors. The application process requires several key documents, including two letters of recommendation from professional or academic colleagues, proof of the conferred degree, and official transcripts. Certified translations are required for non-English documents. All application materials must align with information listed in the applicant’s submission, and name discrepancies must be explained with supporting documentation. Incomplete or inaccurate applications may be excluded at AAUW’s discretion. Once submitted, applications cannot be edited or supplemented. Applications will be reviewed by independent panels of distinguished scholars across arts and humanities, natural and physical sciences, and social sciences. The selection process prioritizes scholarly excellence, originality of research, feasibility of proposed manuscript preparation, and commitment to advancing women and girls in academic and professional spheres. Additional preference may be given to applicants from STEM fields or those addressing gender issues, as well as individuals who have overcome significant life challenges, are first-generation college graduates, or come from single-parent households. The application submission period is open from August 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. Applicants will be notified of award decisions by April 15, 2026. Disbursement of grant funds will occur between July and September 2026. The final report of funded activities must be submitted by July 15, 2027. All inquiries may be directed to the AAUW headquarters at 1310 L Street NW, Suite 1000, Washington, DC 20005, or by phone at 202-785-7700. Applicants must use the AAUW Fellowships & Grants Application Portal to submit their applications.
