Grant Description

The AJ Muste Foundation's Social Justice Fund offers grants to grassroots activist projects in the U.S., aligning with the foundation's mission to support social justice initiatives. The fund prioritizes organizations with limited budgets and minimal access to mainstream funding, fostering a more equitable distribution of resources within the activist community. This approach directly supports the foundation's strategic priority of empowering smaller, often overlooked, groups that are deeply embedded in their communities and are driving change at a fundamental level. The Social Justice Fund specifically targets groups engaged in direct grassroots activism and organizing, particularly those with diverse, representative, and democratic leadership structures. Target beneficiaries include communities impacted by border violence, immigrant criminalization, mass incarceration, police brutality, institutionalized violence against racial, ethnic, gender-based, and LGBTQ communities, economic exploitation, and war. The foundation seeks to empower these groups to confront systemic injustices and build capacity for sustained activism, reflecting a theory of change that emphasizes direct action and community-led solutions. The fund's priorities and focuses are clearly defined, emphasizing efforts to end border violence, abolish prisons, dismantle policing systems, confront institutionalized violence, end economic exploitation, and stop the war machine. These areas represent critical challenges that the foundation believes require urgent attention and grassroots intervention. By focusing on these specific issues, the Social Justice Fund aims to achieve measurable results in areas such as policy reform, community empowerment, and increased public awareness of social justice issues. Expected outcomes include a strengthened network of grassroots organizations, increased advocacy for marginalized communities, and a tangible shift towards a more just and equitable society. The maximum grant award of $10,000 is intended to provide crucial support to projects with expense budgets under $50,000 and organizational budgets of $500,000 or less annually, or for general operating support for organizations with budgets of $500,000 or less annually. The foundation's theory of change posits that by investing in these grassroots efforts, significant and lasting social change can be achieved, creating a ripple effect that benefits broader society.
