Grant Description

The Thriving Communities Grant Program, offered by Norfolk Southern, supports initiatives that promote sustainability, workforce development, and community resiliency within their 22-state network. This program aims to strengthen communities by partnering with nonprofits that drive economic growth, enhance quality of life, and ensure equal access to essential resources. Grants range from $100,000 to $500,000 and are intended to help organizations build a strong foundation for long-term prosperity. Eligible applicants include tax-exempt nonprofit organizations classified under IRS 501(c)(3), state or local government entities serving the public, and public or charter schools. Organizations must be located within 30 minutes of Norfolk Southern’s network to qualify. Priority is given to those closest to the network and whose projects align with Norfolk Southern’s corporate giving focus areas. Funding supports programs addressing basic life necessities such as financial assistance and long-term recovery support. It also includes well-being initiatives targeting mental health, substance abuse treatment, and domestic abuse services. Additionally, grants fund efforts that preserve local culture and identity as well as projects enhancing community spaces through beautification and improvements that attract residents and businesses. Applicants are required to submit a valid Federal W9 form along with documentation proving tax-exempt status. For nonprofits, additional materials include an organizational overview highlighting achievements and impact, a board of directors list, recent IRS Form 990 filings, a budget for the proposed project or program, and the organization’s full-year operating budget. Contact information must be provided for follow-up questions. The application deadline is September 1, 2025. Interested organizations should carefully review eligibility requirements and prepare all necessary documentation before applying. More detailed information about the grant program can be found on Norfolk Southern’s website. This opportunity offers substantial funding for projects that contribute to thriving communities across multiple states in Norfolk Southern’s service area.
