The Knox County Foundation supports a variety of grant opportunities for nonprofit and public service organizations operating in Knox County, Ohio. Through its Small, Major, and Summer Youth Enrichment Grants, the Foundation addresses local needs in education, youth services, health, recreation, arts and culture, social services, and community development. Its mission is centered on improving quality of life in Knox County by funding projects that demonstrate impact, community value, and alignment with strategic priorities.
Small Grants are available up to $10,000 and are accepted quarterly, while Major Grants exceeding $10,000 are accepted biannually. For both programs, applicants must first submit an Expression of Intent (EOI) by the 15th of the month prior to the application deadline. For the January grant cycle, the EOI is due by December 15, and full applications are due by January 15, with award notifications expected in February. The Foundation encourages early-year applications, particularly for larger funding requests, as more of the funding pool is typically available.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public schools, government agencies, and higher education institutions. All projects must benefit Knox County residents. Projects must be clearly defined, time-bound, and non-political. The Foundation rarely funds operating or payroll costs unless directly tied to expansion or strategic growth. Ineligible requests include travel-focused proposals, projects completed before award, private capital improvements, and general support to religious institutions.
Priority is given to projects that demonstrate innovation, collaboration, economic impact, and measurable community benefit. The Foundation values being a funding partner rather than the sole funder and expects applicants to include matching funds when possible. Applicants seeking over $100,000 must notify the Foundation at least one year in advance and are usually required to present their proposal in person to the Board or Grants Committee.
All application materials must be submitted through the Foundationโs Online Grant Portal. Awarded grantees must sign a Grant Acceptance Statement within 30 days and request funds within 180 days. Grantees are required to submit follow-up reports to maintain eligibility for future support.
Applicants are encouraged to apply earlier in the year for better funding availability and to contact the Foundation in advance for large grant requests
