The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is forecasting a funding opportunity aimed at extending the work of the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network. This initiative falls under the Human Genome Research program and seeks to continue collecting and analyzing long-term outcome data from participants who received genomically informed risk assessments (GIRA) and management recommendations. The overarching aim is to understand the longer-term effects of genomic risk-based medical guidance.
This limited competition opportunity is only open to clinical sites previously funded under RFA-HG-19-013 and RFA-HG-19-014. The grant uses the U01 cooperative agreement mechanism and requires that applicants conduct clinical trials. The scope of work includes extending follow-up of 25,000 participants from at least one year to a minimum of four years. It further includes evaluating adherence to preventive recommendations, examining associated health outcomes, and identifying demographic and non-genomic factors influencing adherence.
The NIH expects to release the full Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on or around September 19, 2025, with an estimated application deadline of November 19, 2025. Projects are expected to commence on July 1, 2026. Ten awards are anticipated with a total program funding of approximately $5.8 million.
Eligibility is restricted to institutions that previously received funding under the specified RFAs. Eligible organizations include nonprofits with IRS 501(c)(3) status (excluding higher education institutions), as well as public, state-controlled, and private institutions of higher education. No matching funds are required.
Applicants are expected to form collaborations and propose research projects that are responsive to the NOFO goals. Specific contact for inquiries is Dr. Robb Rowley of the NHGRI, reachable via email at Robb.Rowley@nih.gov or by phone at 301-827-9126. This forecasted opportunity allows potential applicants ample time to prepare proposals that align with the programโs aims and objectives.
