Grant Description

The Scioto Foundation is a community foundation that serves the people of the Scioto County area in Ohio. Established in 1975, the Foundation has distributed approximately $30 million in grants and distributions to local nonprofit organizations, schools, and local governments. The Foundation's mission is to strengthen the community by supporting projects and initiatives that improve the quality of life for local residents. It acts as a charitable resource for the region, encouraging innovation and addressing unmet community needs. The Foundation awards grants to organizations recognized under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Grants are not provided to individuals, though funded projects may ultimately benefit individuals. The Foundation does not typically fund routine operating expenses, annual giving, budget deficits, religious organizations’ activities, or entertainment, lodging, and meal expenses. However, it may support non-religious programs offered by religious organizations, such as hunger centers, job training, or child care. The Foundation looks favorably on projects that serve broad segments of the community or underserved populations. Eligible projects generally fall into the following areas: education, healthcare, community development, economic development, arts and culture, social services, and civic benefit. Both established organizations and newly formed nonprofit groups are welcome to apply. The Foundation does not reimburse completed projects, focusing instead on providing seed money for new initiatives or for existing groups moving in new directions. Preference is given to projects that align with community needs and do not duplicate services already provided by other organizations. The Foundation favors applications seeking partial funding rather than full project costs. The Foundation reviews grant applications quarterly, with deadlines on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. Applications must include five copies and one original of the proposal. Faxed or incomplete applications are not accepted. Required materials include a signed grant application transmittal form, a full proposal in the prescribed format, proof of tax-exempt status, job descriptions or résumés of key project personnel or consultants, current financial statements or audit reports, and letters of support or collaboration. Applications must address key questions about project goals, background of the applicant organization, community needs, expected outcomes, implementation plans, evaluation methods, sustainability, and budget justification. The Foundation notifies applicants of funding decisions following each quarterly meeting of its Governing Committee. Interested applicants may contact the Scioto Foundation at 303 Chillicothe Street, P.O. Box 911, Portsmouth, OH 45662. The Foundation can be reached by phone at (740) 354-4612, by fax at (740) 354-1912, or by email at info@thesciotofoundation.org. The Foundation encourages local organizations to apply and contribute to the well-being of the Scioto County community through innovative and impactful projects.
