Land and Waters Preservation Trust Grant
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations and local governments in the Pine River Watershed of Minnesota to implement projects that improve water quality, promote sustainable land use, and protect local habitats.
The Land and Waters Preservation Trust Grant is a community-focused funding opportunity designed to support environmental preservation and restoration efforts within the Pine River Watershed region of Minnesota. This grant program is administered by the Initiative Foundation and was established through a partnership among the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA), the Pine River Watershed Committee (PRWC), and the Initiative Foundation itself. Functioning as a Turn-Key Fund, the Land and Waters Preservation Trust operates as a philanthropic vehicle dedicated to preserving and protecting water quality and supporting ecological stewardship in the watershed. The primary objective of the Land and Waters Preservation Trust Grant is to fund projects that address water quality, sustainable land use, and habitat preservation in the Pine River Watershed. Eligible proposals must align with one or more of the stated funding priorities: enhancing and protecting surface and aquifer water quality, supporting sustainable riparian land management practices, and protecting habitat for native plants and animals. The fund does not support ongoing maintenance or capital expenditures, and all proposed projects should be capable of being completed within the calendar year 2026. This grant is open to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and local units of government that directly serve the Pine River Watershed area. Examples of eligible entities include WAPOA, PRWC, and other lake associations in the region. Organizations that are not 501(c)(3) nonprofits or local government units must partner with a qualifying fiscal agent. This eligibility structure ensures that funds are directed to organizations with a mission and capacity aligned with the grant’s environmental goals. The application process begins with completing and submitting the official grant application form via email to Tom Watson at [email protected]. The submission window for 2026 is open from February 20 through April 1. Applications will undergo an initial review by the Land and Waters Advisory Committee. If a proposal aligns with the funding guidelines and demonstrates merit, applicants may be asked to provide additional information by April 20. Final grant award decisions will be made by May 1, 2026. Each year, up to $16,000 in total grants are awarded, and while applications for any amount will be considered, the fund encourages proposals requesting up to $5,000. Funded projects are expected to begin promptly and be completed within 2026. Selected recipients will be contacted following the final review process conducted by the Advisory Board. Applicants are required to include a full project description, an explanation of how results will be measured, responsible parties, beneficiary engagement, and maintenance considerations. Attachments such as the total project budget and proof of 501(c)(3) status are also required. For all inquiries about the grant or application process, interested applicants are directed to contact Tom Watson via the email provided. This annual grant opportunity is a cornerstone in the region’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the ecological health and sustainability of the Pine River Watershed.
