Grant Description

The Cowles Charitable Trust was founded in 1948 by Gardner โ€œMikeโ€ Cowles, Jr., a well-known newspaper editor and member of the Cowles family. It was officially registered as a private 501(c)(3) foundation in New York in June 1950 (EIN: 13โ€‘6090295). The Trust exists to carry on the Cowles familyโ€™s philanthropic legacy by supporting causes in education, social justice, human rights, ethical journalism, health and medicine, arts and culture, as well as medical and climate research. As of 2023, the Trust reported $956,000 in revenue and $1.74 million in expenses, operating at a deficit. Its net assets totaled approximately $13.9 million. Each year, the Trust distributes more than $1 million through about 200 grants, with typical grant sizes up to $10,000 per organization. Occasionally, grants between $12,000 and $35,000 are awarded. Geographically, the Trust prioritizes Downstate New York, including the greater New York City area, and select counties in South Florida. While national and international organizations may occasionally receive funding, these are exceptions rather than the norm. Only IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply; individuals are not considered. Organizations seeking multiyear funding must complete all reporting requirements from previous awards before reapplying. The Trust funds a variety of activities, including specific projects or programs, general operating support, and education or outreach efforts. It emphasizes support for organizations focused on arts and culture, education, social justice and human rights, ethical journalism, health and medicine, and research related to climate or medical issues. Applications are reviewed quarterly, with deadlines falling on March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. Late submissions are automatically moved to the next review cycle. All applications must be submitted via email to submissions@cowlescharitabletrust.org. The Trust does not accept phone calls or in-person meetings unless initiated by its staff. Each organization may only apply once every 12 months, and no new application can be submitted while a multiyear grant is active. A final report is required within 60 days of completing the funded project or using up the grant funds. Failure to submit this report may jeopardize future funding eligibility. The Trust places high value on applicants who demonstrate impact, a broad funding base, and alignment with its mission. It generally prefers not to be the sole funder of a project. Notable grantees of the Cowles Charitable Trust include the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, Planned Parenthood, Doctors Without Borders, National Urban League, and GRASP, among others working in the fields of social justice and health. The Trust is governed primarily by descendants of founder Mike Cowles. The current chairwoman is Virginia Cowles Schroth, and the Trust is administered out of its office in Staten Island, New York.
