Grant Description

The Access Fund’s Climbing Conservation Grant Program provides financial support to projects that protect, enhance, and steward climbing environments across the United States. Since its establishment in 1991, the Access Fund has awarded more than $1.5 million to local organizations, climbers, and public agencies dedicated to the long-term preservation and accessibility of climbing areas. As a member-supported nonprofit organization, the Access Fund prioritizes projects that demonstrate strong local climber involvement, collaboration with land managers, and measurable, sustainable impact. The program welcomes applications from a broad array of eligible applicants, including local climbing organizations, government agencies, conservation and land trust organizations, grassroots and community groups, and individuals. Notably, applicants are not required to have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status, but such applicants are encouraged to contact the Access Fund prior to submitting a proposal. Individuals receiving grants over $600 will be issued IRS Form 1099 and should consult tax advisers regarding income reporting. Preference is given to first-time applicants, and organizations are not eligible for consecutive-cycle funding. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $4,000, although requests exceeding $10,000 are considered if the proposed project has national significance and includes substantial matching funds. Projects must take place within the United States and generally fall into one of six categories: educational outreach, stewardship and climbing facility improvements, local support and mobilization, land acquisition, research, and policy or advocacy. Fixed anchors, bolts, guiding, equipment, and indoor climbing facilities are not eligible for funding. Most successful applications align with multiple criteria such as being action-oriented, reducing climber impact, enhancing access, and promoting inclusivity. Projects involving facilities or land use require landowner or land manager approval at the time of application. The application process begins with a self-assessment of project eligibility followed by submission prior to one of two annual deadlines: March 1 for the spring cycle and August 1 for the fall cycle. Applications must be submitted electronically and include a completed application form, budget, and a range of supporting documentation. Required attachments include financial and governance documents, proof of tax status, high-resolution project photos, maps, and letters of support from local climbing organizations or land managers as applicable. Specific documentation is also required for stewardship projects, LCO startup funding, land acquisitions, and fiscal sponsorship arrangements. Following submission, applications undergo committee review with final decisions announced approximately one month after the deadline. Funds must be claimed within six months of award notification, and projects must commence within the same timeframe. Grant recipients are required to submit a project report within 30 days of project completion, including a final or interim report form, photos, and any media coverage. Projects that remain incomplete beyond a year may result in the return of unused funds. All funded projects must publicly recognize the Access Fund’s contribution using the organization’s name and logo. For larger or more complex projects, applicants are encouraged to consider leveraging Access Fund support alongside the American Alpine Club’s Cornerstone Conservation Grant. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their project ideas with Access Fund staff at an early stage to ensure alignment with program goals. All communications and completed applications should be directed to grantapplications@accessfund.org, with confirmation expected within two business days. Additional assistance connecting with local climbing organizations can be obtained via localsupport@accessfund.org. For further inquiries, applicants may contact Access Fund by phone at (303) 545-6772.
