The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) offers grant funding for Cities, Counties, and Nonprofit Organizations located within its seven-county service region in northwestern Minnesota, encompassing Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau counties. This applicant category is one of the primary avenues through which community-oriented organizations can access support for arts projects. The program is structured to support public art initiatives and arts-based events that enrich community life.
Eligible applicants include a range of nonprofit organizations—such as historical societies, healthcare-related nonprofits, fairs—as well as governmental units like city and county governments. New arts nonprofits may also apply under this category, provided they meet the regional and organizational requirements. Schools are explicitly excluded from this funding stream, as they have a dedicated grant category. Projects may include hosting folk artists at local festivals, producing theatrical performances, or organizing community workshops led by artists.
Grants are available in amounts ranging from $500 to $10,000. All applicants are required to provide a minimum 10% cash match. If the proposed project involves repeat sponsorship of an artist or group previously funded by NWMAC, the required cash match increases to 25%. These match requirements must be met with verifiable cash contributions rather than in-kind support. The council emphasizes that funding is divided across four application cycles, and early application is encouraged.
Applications must include two main components: the Arts Grant application for panel review and a Data Collection application submitted to the State Arts Board. Both forms are required for funding consideration, and updated guidance materials are available to support applicants in the completion process. Training modules from prior years may still be referenced but reflect slightly outdated procedures.
Grant deadlines occur quarterly on July 31, October 31, February 28, and April 30. The application portal closes annually from May 1 through June 30. Organizations are advised to prepare their applications well ahead of these deadlines. Guidance and support are available via email at [email protected] or by calling 218-745-8886. Successful applicants receive notification following review and must comply with reporting and evaluation requirements tied to public impact.
Budget entries must match narrative explanations; clearly list all paid personnel and their qualifications; identify public-facing impact such as venues or community visibility; make sure start dates are at least two months after your submission; include community support or explain absence of additional funding
