The U.S. Bank Foundation Cleantech Award is a private grant initiative designed to accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship in the clean technology sector. The program is targeted at early-stage companies working on environmentally impactful technologies that promote economic development, job creation, and emissions reduction. Administered by the U.S. Bank Foundation in partnership with Evergreen Climate Innovations, the award combines financial support with mentorship and ecosystem exposure to support growth-oriented cleantech startups.
Each year, two recipients are selected to receive a non-recourse grant of $30,000, along with 12 months of business mentorship from industry leaders at U.S. Bank and Evergreen Climate Innovations. In addition to funding and mentorship, awardees benefit from increased visibility among investors and potential customers. The award supports a broad range of cleantech sectors including renewable energy, smart buildings, mobility, energy storage, sustainable food and agriculture, carbon mitigation, and more. Companies must demonstrate a mission-aligned product or service that delivers positive environmental outcomes.
Eligible applicants must be legally incorporated entities with 2 to 12 full-time employees and must not have raised more than $3 million from outside investors. Applicants must also hold rights to their intellectual property. Preferred qualifications include having a market-ready product and generating revenue. The award is specifically open to companies based in select U.S. states, including most of the Midwest and several states in the West and South. The award does not support nonprofits or companies outside the specified employment and funding criteria.
The Cleantech Award selection process is competitive and merit-based. Although the 2026 application cycle is closed, the program operates on a recurring annual basis. The application process includes submission through an online platform, with applicants being assessed on innovation, potential for impact, and alignment with the program’s environmental and economic goals.
