Bontrager Family Foundation Grant Program

The Bontrager Family Foundation, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, offers grants designed to support initiatives that reflect the family’s deep-rooted values of Christian faith, family support, and community development. With a strong legacy dating back to Lloyd and Bertha Bontrager’s early philanthropic commitments prior to founding Jayco Inc. in 1968, the foundation maintains a tradition of charitable giving, particularly focused on the Middlebury, Indiana area. Guided by members of the Bontrager family, the foundation prioritizes projects that align with its mission to uplift the local community, especially through faith-based and family-oriented efforts. Proposals are evaluated for their potential to create measurable outcomes, with a special preference given to projects based in or around Middlebury, though all efforts must benefit Elkhart County residents. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) public charities. Individuals and organizations without nonprofit status, political or lobbying entities, and fundraising events are not eligible for funding. The foundation encourages organizations to apply with clear, well-structured plans and defined metrics for success. Applications tied to large capital campaigns or general fundraising are less likely to receive funding. Instead, the foundation looks for project-based proposals with strong goals and local impact. Grant awards typically range from $1,500 to $30,000, with the average award being around $14,000. Applicants may include a detailed budget with their application to show how funds will be allocated. There is no limit on the number of submissions or the frequency with which an organization may apply. The Bontrager Family Foundation accepts applications on two fixed deadlines: May 31 and October 31. Proposals received after these deadlines are deferred to the following cycle. Submissions are reviewed by the Bontrager family with assistance from the Community Foundation, and all applicants are notified of their status after the review period. Organizations are encouraged to ensure alignment with the foundation’s focus areas, gather internal input, and clearly articulate their plans and intended outcomes.
