Harvey L. Neiman Grant
This funding opportunity supports research projects that explore the impact of emerging technologies on radiology practice and patient care, particularly focusing on innovations like artificial intelligence and new delivery models, aimed at improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.
The Harvey L. Neiman Grant is a research funding opportunity administered by the Neiman Health Policy Institute (HPI), a national organization affiliated with the American College of Radiology (ACR). The HPI’s mission centers on advancing evidence-based health policy and radiology practices that promote safe, effective patient care and efficient use of healthcare resources. Through the Neiman Grant, the Institute seeks to fund empirical, policy-relevant research projects that have the potential to yield actionable outcomes. These outcomes should contribute to the transformation of health policy or radiological practice by improving patient outcomes, reducing disparities, promoting appropriate use of care, or illustrating the value of radiology to support reimbursement and patient access. The 2026 priority area for the Harvey L. Neiman Grant is the impact of emerging technologies on radiology practice and patient care. Of particular interest are studies involving artificial intelligence and non-interpretive innovations that may alleviate the workload of radiologists or technologists, and assess their economic implications. Additional areas of focus include new delivery and payment models in radiology, the sustainability of the radiology workforce, cancer screening adherence and policy, and innovations that highlight the value of radiologists within health systems or population health frameworks. Proposals should aim to extend the HPI’s current capabilities, offering fresh perspectives, methodologies, or data sources not previously employed by the Institute. Applicants may request up to $75,000 in total funding, including indirect costs, which are capped at 15%. Funding may be used for investigator salaries, research staff support, technical services, and relevant data resources, with the stipulation that the research must extend, rather than replicate, HPI’s existing resources. Eligible applicants include full-time faculty and trainees with an MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent degree, based at U.S. educational institutions. The principal investigator must be a current member of the American College of Radiology; other key personnel may participate with proper justification for non-membership. Applications will be accepted via email to [email protected] and must be submitted no later than 8 PM ET on March 3, 2026. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed. Required submission materials include a detailed five-page research narrative, a one-page executive summary, a reference list, letters of support, a budget plan, and NIH biosketches or CVs for key personnel. Letters of support should include one from the applicant’s department chair, with preference given to additional endorsements from ACR commission or committee chairs. The selection process involves an initial screening by ACR staff for eligibility and completeness, followed by evaluation by the HPI Research Selection Committee (RSC). Projects will be assessed based on significance, innovation, methodology, impact, and alignment with HPI goals, following a scoring model similar to that used by NIH. Selected applicants may be invited to revise their proposals through video consultation with HPI staff. Awards will be made following final approval of the revised research design and budget. Awarded projects are expected to be completed within 12 months. Interim and final reports must be submitted, with an opportunity for virtual updates mid-project. Awardees are encouraged to submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, particularly the Journal of the American College of Radiology, and to present findings at national conferences. All publications and communications related to the grant must acknowledge support from the Neiman Health Policy Institute. The goal is to ensure that funded research drives meaningful improvements in radiology policy and practice nationwide.
