Grant Description

The Spartanburg County Foundation offers Nonprofit Effectiveness Grants designed to enhance the internal capacity of community-based organizations operating in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The foundation is dedicated to helping residents achieve their full human potential by promoting continuous improvement in three primary areas: quality of life, educational achievement, and economic mobility. These grants are intended to support nonprofits in areas such as board governance, financial management, strategic communications, succession planning, evaluation, and similar operational improvements that build long-term organizational strength. The foundation considers proposals from 501(c)(3) nonprofit and/or tax-exempt entities serving Spartanburg County residents. Organizations outside the county may also be eligible provided that funding benefits remain within the county and that clear evidence of local impact is presented. The grant opportunity specifically excludes individual schools, organizations operating for less than a year, and entities engaged in lobbying, political, or sectarian religious activities unless they meet inclusive service criteria. Applicants must also comply with all applicable nondiscrimination laws at the local, state, and federal levels. Each awarded grant provides funding up to $10,000 for a one-year period. Applications are reviewed quarterly with deadlines in February, May, August, and October, and awards issued by the end of each corresponding quarter. The grant period begins on April 1 following the Q1 deadline and ends the following year on April 1. Applications must be submitted through the foundation’s online portal; submissions via other formats will not be considered. The application requires detailed responses regarding the organization’s mission, the specific need the grant will address, and supporting data. Applicants must describe the planned project activities, define SMART goals, and present a detailed year-long timeline. A balanced budget is required, listing income (pending and confirmed) and matching expenses. Additional documentation, including a recent IRS 990 filing, the organization’s budget, and any consultant proposals, must be uploaded with the application. While the foundation encourages projects that can attract additional funding from other donors or institutions, no matching funds are explicitly required. Organizations are evaluated based on alignment with the foundation’s mission, data-informed programming, outcome measurement capacity, and funding leverage potential. The grant process places importance on demonstrating how the project will ultimately benefit residents of Spartanburg County and contribute to long-term organizational effectiveness.
