RENEW Wisconsin’s Solar for Good initiative supports the transition of mission-based nonprofit organizations and houses of worship in Wisconsin to clean, renewable solar energy. Through a long-standing partnership with the Couillard Solar Foundation, Solar for Good provides grants in the form of donated solar panels or cash support for solar canopy installations. The program fosters long-term energy savings and reinvestment into nonprofit missions while educating communities about solar energy.
The Fall 2025 grant cycle opens on September 1, 2025, and closes on October 1, 2025. Eligible applicants are Wisconsin-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits or houses of worship pursuing solar installation projects. The program prioritizes organizations that serve communities focused on social justice, low-income populations, communities of color, children or seniors, rural areas, education, and innovation.
Solar panel donations cover up to 50% of a nonprofit’s total solar panel needs. For systems smaller than 100 kilowatts, applicants may receive up to 75 panels (approximately $25,000 in value). Larger systems (100 kW and above) may receive up to 150 panels (approximately $50,000 in value). Awardees must budget for shipping costs of donated equipment and may purchase additional panels directly from the Couillard Solar Foundation.
The program also offers cash grants for solar canopies, awarded on a tiered basis depending on system size. For a 20 kW canopy, applicants may receive $6,000. Each additional 10 kW in system size receives an additional $3,000, up to $15,000 for a 50–59 kW canopy. Grant values are calculated based on the final installed array size. Canopy recipients are responsible for additional expenses such as labor, electrical components, and site preparation.
Solar for Good is not only a funding initiative—it also offers education and outreach. Organizations interested in learning more about the benefits of solar energy may invite RENEW Wisconsin to present to their staff or board. Questions can be directed to solarforgood@renewwisconsin.org.
Budget for shipping costs and installation expenses. Consider applying early to increase chances due to popularity of the program. Educational outreach support is also available upon request.
