Filmmakers Grant
This funding initiative provides financial support to Los Angeles County filmmakers in the final stages of their projects, focusing on post-production elements to enhance diverse cultural storytelling.
The Filmmakers Grant, offered by the City of West Hollywood, is a competitive arts funding opportunity designed to assist local filmmakers in sharing their completed film projects with the public. Currently in its second year of a three-year pilot cycle, the grant supports the exhibition and distribution phase of film production, aiming to uplift diverse voices and strengthen the city’s cultural footprint through cinematic storytelling. It is administered through the City’s Arts Division under the oversight of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, which is committed to cultural equity, inclusivity, and support for marginalized artists. The grant provides up to $10,000 per project, with a total funding pool of $10,000 available for the 2027 cycle. Applicants may use funds for a range of distribution-related costs including hiring a distribution or impact consultant, covering film festival submission fees, and producing marketing materials such as posters, trailers, or press kits. The program is explicitly focused on helping filmmakers who already have a completed film and a viable strategy for reaching audiences, particularly within West Hollywood or a five-block radius of the city. This program does not fund development or production work; only post-completion exhibition and outreach. Eligibility is limited to individual artists, artist collectives, or nonprofit arts organizations based in Los Angeles County. Applicants must be the director or producer of the completed film and must submit a work sample, a clearly articulated marketing and distribution plan, and a community engagement proposal. Additional eligibility rules prohibit applicants from receiving concurrent City funding for the same project or from applying to more than one arts grant category within the same year. City officials and their immediate family members are not eligible. Applications must be submitted online via the City’s official website. All materials must be complete and submitted by 3:00 PM Pacific Time on July 1, 2026. Submissions are evaluated first by City staff for eligibility and then scored by a seven-member Peer Review Panel composed of qualified arts professionals. Scoring is based on four equally weighted criteria: the strength of the project proposal, clarity and feasibility of goals and timeline, quality and relevance of work samples, and completeness of submission materials. Following peer review in August 2026, recommendations are forwarded to the Performing Arts and Cultural Affairs Subcommittee in September, with final approval by the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and City Council expected by October 2026. Grant notifications are planned for October, with an in-person grantee orientation in November 2026. Award disbursement is expected in February 2027, contingent upon the completion of contracting requirements including proof of general liability insurance. Grantees are required to credit the City of West Hollywood in promotional materials and comply with reporting requirements, including a final report due within 30 days of project completion. The City of West Hollywood’s Arts Division emphasizes its commitment to cultural equity through this grant, encouraging applications from a wide range of backgrounds and artistic disciplines. The Filmmakers Grant not only supports the professional advancement of filmmakers but also serves as a platform for celebrating identity, culture, and shared experiences through the powerful medium of film.
