Source water is defined as “any aquifer, surface water body, or watercourse from which water is taken either periodically or continuously by a public water system for drinking or food processing purposes” (Idaho Source Water Assessment Plan 1999). Eligible activities include those that lead to reducing the risk of contamination of the drinking water source. Projects must contribute to improved protection of one or more public water supply sources. Projects will be expected to provide long-term benefits to source water quality. Projects with measures to reduce the threat of contaminants that could impact a specific drinking water source or regional drinking water supply are eligible for funding: Contaminant source identification (research) Contaminant pathway removal (closure of abandoned or unused wells) Contaminant removal (hazardous waste collection, pollution prevention, and waste reduction) Contaminant management (implement best management practices [BMPs] and structures to divert contaminated runoff from the source) Restoration and/or conservation of the ecological function of source water protection areas Education and information sharing (brochures, workshops, and media campaigns) Security measures to protect the source Grants can be used to implement security measures as long as the project protects the source area. Projects that protect the physical extraction structure (e.g., well, spring, or intake structures) are eligible for funding: Fencing around wells or springs. The fencing can include other buildings or tanks, as long as the fenced-in area is part of the source area. Gates for well and intake access roads and access control for those areas. Alarms, signs, cameras, locks, and lights for sources if they are clearly related to protecting the source water area. Grant funds are intended to target activities that go beyond normal operation and maintenance standards and existing system infrastructure deficiencies. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for the RNA Modifications Driving Oncogenesis (RNAMoDO) Initiative. It aims to promote mechanistic research in the emerging area of RNA modifications that drive oncogenesis, with a focus on the central role of RNA modifications in translational reprogramming of cancer cells. RNA modifications have been recognized to exert a substantial impact on gene expression and function and their de-regulation has been linked to the cancer phenotype. In particular, recent insights point to a crucial role for mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA modifications in translational reprogramming during tumor initiation, progression, and adaptation to therapy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this reshaping of the translatome caused by dynamic changes in RNA modifications, and especially the interplay between different RNA modifications within and across RNA molecules during translation, are not understood and represent the focus of this initiative. Historically, the research community has largely pursued investigations of RNA modifications by studying single RNA species and modification types. However, elucidating how dysregulation of mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA modifications reprograms translation to drive oncogenesis is not likely feasible for any single research laboratory, but will require the combination of expertise in mRNA, tRNA and rRNA biology, translational regulation, and cancer research. To stimulate progress in this emerging field, the RNAMoDO program will support collaborative research projects, preferably using an MPI structure, on how modifications in mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA molecules can drive the oncogenic process through translational reprogramming. To be responsive to the NOFO, each project will also explore the impact of interactions between modifications residing on the same or different RNA molecules during translation. This Notice of Intent to Publish (NOITP) is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. NIEHS invites applications for cooperative agreements to support the development of model programs for the training and education of workers engaged in activities related to hazardous materials and waste generation, removal, containment, transportation and emergency response within the Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear weapons complex. The aim of this funding opportunity is to prevent work-related harm through safety and health training. The training programs consist of information and practical exercises with the objective of raising the knowledge of workers in protecting themselves and the community from being exposed to hazardous materials encountered during hazardous waste operations; facility decommissioning and decontamination; hazardous materials transportation; environmental restoration of contaminated facilities; or chemical emergency response. Currently, tens of thousands of DOE employees are required to complete safety and health training. The goal of this training is to help reduce the risk of workers being exposed during work activities to hazardous materials and hazardous waste products.
