The Research and Education Grant program funds projects that result in gains in farmer knowledge, awareness, skills, and attitudes that are then applied to make measurable on-farm changes leading to greater sustainability. A wide variety of topics can be funded by Northeast SARE, including marketing and business, crop production, raising livestock, aquaculture, social sustainability, urban and Indigenous agriculture and much more. Other aspects of projects funded through the Northeast SARE program include those that address climate-smart agriculture practices intended to improve ecological, social, and economic resilience to climate change; increase carbon sequestration; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Climate-smart practices include reduced and no-till, cover crops, prescribed grazing, ruminant feed management, manure management, fertilizer management, and on-farm energy efficiency. In addition, projects may address traditional ecological knowledge. Funding Information Awards typically range from $30,000 to $250,000. Grant Period Typical project length is 2 to 3 years. The maximum project length allowed is 3.5 years. Geographical FocusΒ  The Northeast region includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. Eligible Applicants Research and Education Grants are open to anyone who works with farmers, including personnel at nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, Cooperative Extension, municipalities, tribal governments, state departments of agriculture, federal agencies, research farms and experiment stations, for-profit business entities (such as private consultants, farmers and veterinary practices), etc. Northeast SARE encourages projects submitted from or in collaboration with women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). Additionally, they encourage projects submitted from or in collaboration with Minority Serving Institutions (including 1890s and other historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and tribal colleges and universities) and other organizations in the Northeast that work with historically underserved communities. Your organization must have the legal structure and financial capacity to receive and implement a Northeast SARE contract, including expending funds needed for the project prior to receiving reimbursements from Northeast SARE; advance payments are not possible. Projects must take place within the Northeast region. Qualifications Required for Consideration Funding is available to support several initiatives as described below: Signage for Community-Based Hunting Programs Open only to County and Local government units within New Jersey, including municipal park systems. Applicants must own or otherwise be authorized to have signage installed at the identified locations. If approved to receive signage, an applicant will not receive any direct funding. Instead, NJDEP will contract to have the signs produced and delivered to the applicant. Deer Population Density Estimate/Survey Open only to County and Local government units within New Jersey, including municipal park systems. Forest Health Survey Open only to County and Local government units within New Jersey, including municipal park systems. Venison Donation Program Open to all entities identified under Who Is Eligible. Deer must be processed at New Jersey Department of Health inspected butchers. Venison must be donated to food banks operating in the State of New Jersey. Grant Limitations As noted above, funding for signage will not be included as a financial award to the recipient. NJDEP will coordinate the production and delivery of any signs. An applicant may apply for funding under any or all of the four (4) identified initiatives. The Department will have final determination of which initiatives and for how much they are funded for each applicant. The Department reserves the right not to award a grant if, in its sole discretion, no acceptable application is received, funding is no longer available or for any other reason. This Special Project funding is intended to allow, for example, a civic organization to present a music program as part of its annual holiday celebration; a social organization to mount an exhibit; or the local center to stage a theatrical performance. A single event.Β  General Programming Support (GPS) Funding is for any applicant, regardless of the intent of its charter, to offset the expense of presenting major, on-going arts programs. These programs should have their own mission and goals and contain multiple events or activities. These activities could include a series of concerts, history lecture or other multiple events throughout the year and is distinguished from Special Projects by having multiple events rather than a single activity within a calendar year.Β  General Operating Support (GOS) This funding is for applicants whose charter is primarily arts or history related. It is designed to provide general operating support for groups that increase exposure to art/history in the community. This would include, but is not limited to community theater groups, dance companies, museums or galleries, orchestras, and singing groups who exist primarily to create and/or perform art or history projects. General Operating Support funding is more stringent in its requirements and more detail is required in substantiating fiscal responsibility. Eligible ExpensesΒ  The following expenses are eligible: Salaries and wages Contracted services/outside fees and services Printing, publicity, marketing Postage and telephone Fundraising and development Staff training/capacity building Lease expenses Mortgage interest Equipment purchase, installation, and lease (e.g., computers, office furnishings, files) Utilities and HVAC (purchase, installation, and operational costs of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) Maintenance of collections and the interiors of structures (Note: Interior construction is not considered maintenance and is not an eligible expense.) Basic grounds maintenance Travel and transportation (automobile travel @$.31/mile, train, or air coach travel) Insurance Licensing and registration fees (e.g., New Jersey charities registration) Planning for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Long-term and strategic planning Eligiblity Criteria An applicant may apply for grant funding from the Arts and/or History under three categories.
