Empower students to make healthy choices that include fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains and lean protein every day. Empower students to learn and practice social and emotional skills. Empower staff to implement and participate in well-being initiatives that support a culture of wellness at school for all employees. The program offers necessary resources and professional development to: Facilitate a healthier school environment. Assist educators in recognizing issues of trauma that children may be experiencing that could affect their education. Improve the mental health of children. Increase school attendance and academic achievement. Reduce communities highlighted by state and national data that illustrates rampant disparities in health, education and the economy. Eligibility and Program Requirements  Using state and national data documenting health, education and economic disparities throughout Michigan communities, they are recruiting school districts to join the Building Healthy Communities program where these disparities affect residents the most. They’re presenting the opportunity to central district administrators, school-level administrators and teachers in an effort to achieve districtwide support and commitment. Participation in Building Healthy Communities: Reducing Health Disparities in Elementary Schools requires a school district to: Complete a Memorandum of Understanding between the school district and the program. Secure support from central district administrators, school-level administrators and teachers. Make sure all elementary schools in the district participate. Commit to implementing the entire program. The Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Grant Program, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Resources Division (FRD), assists rural fire departments in acquiring firefighting equipment. The program requires a 50/50 matching grant and is available to fire departments serving communities with populations of 10,000 or less. Eligible projects include personal protection gear for wildland fires, Class A foam generating equipment, dry hydrants, communications equipment, and breathing apparatus. Applications are reviewed and prioritized by the FRD, with awards capped at $4,999 per project. Projects involving multiple departments are considered on a case-by-case basis. Applications must be submitted by June 28, 2024, with awards announced around December 15, 2024. Projects must be completed by August 1, 2025.

This $1.5 million initiative aims to spur growth in the careers of culture workers who have experienced historical trends of disadvantage, underrepresentation, and oppression due to their race. The initiative offers funding, professional development, and social networking opportunities to culture workers of color to those trends and help culture workers of color advance their careers. The initiative will distribute 74 unrestricted awards of $15,000 each.
